When we think of home organization, we tend to have an image of perfectly labeled jars with different types of pasta and cereal in them. But there’s more to home organization than buying tons of plastic containers for that Instagram worthy picture.
Home organization requires thought, it should optimize the space and functionality of your home and make your everyday life easier.
A huge mistake we often make is creating systems in our homes we find difficult to adhere to. If these systems make you take extra steps or open and close lids each time you want to get something, it’s going to annoy you just a little every day. It will become an inconvenience and simply won’t work. When organizing your home, the system you create should adhere to the habits your family already has and not the other way around.
Home organization hacks that will make your life easier:
1. Understand the ”drop zones” in your house
It’s hard to create new habits for yourself, yet alone create a new habit for your husband or kids. So, instead of coming up with new ideas on where to put everyday items, watch where you naturally drop them. These places are called ”drop zones”.
If all the keys are going on that one table once you’re back home, put a bowl there. If the coats are always going in that one corner, put a hook there. Home organization shouldn’t make your life harder, it should make your life easier by adapting to the habits you already have.
2. Make things easily accessible
Again, home organization shouldn’t make your life harder. Make things easily accessible. Consider what you use every day and what you need once in a while. Don’t keep your everyday items on the top shelves if you’re gonna have to tiptoe and struggle each time you need them. This becomes especially hard once you have a toddler who wants to be carried everywhere. Whether it’s a face cream, you use every morning or your favourite cup to drink from, make home organization work for you, not the other way around.
Similarly, stop putting things you rarely use in places that are most easily accessible. Unless you eat pizza every day, there is really no need to have your pizza cutter as the first thing you see when you open the main drawer in your kitchen.
3. Use velvet hangers instead of plastic or wooden ones
Ergh… That annoying feeling of having to put clothes back on the hanger again and again because they keep sliding off. Velvet hangers are great for holding slippery fabrics, they’ll save you time and sanity. Besides, they look much better than plastic ones too. It’s an investment you won’t regret.
4. Apply the ”in groups of 3” rule when decorating
Okay, I know it sounds strange, BUT, it’s a real thing. Interior designers have been using this trick for years. The trick? Stack decorative items in your house in groups of 3 (or 5 or 7). Apparently, objects arranged in odd numbers are more interesting and eye-catching than even-numbered groups. Don’t believe me? Try it for yourself!
5. Use a rotating organizer for everyday items
Goes hand in hand with hack #2 of making every day items easily accessible. Use a rotating organizer for the small things you need every day. Use it to put your make-up, perfume and skin care products. After all, you have better things to do than digging in the cupboards searching for something you need.
